during the 1950’s american exotica exponents les baxter, martin denny and arthur lyman fused african and latin rhythms with caribbean and polynesian sounds to evoke the sonic equivalent of a tropical island paradise. this 3rd volume of britxotica examines how their english equivalents fuelled by the popularity of hit musical south pacific, attempted to create the same sun-drenched haitian ambience in rain-soaked, post-war london.

the europe-centered techno scene might be thinking: where is techno in a city as vast, dynamic and electric as new york? it’s alive and well, and keeps growing through aptly-named new york trax. founded in 2016 and based in brooklyn, new york trax is an outlet for new york music, by new york artists, in new york city. new york trax 02 was written by boris brenecki (ontal, impulse controls), who has recently relocated to new york, starting a new chapter in his life and artistic career. this record is the very first material he produced in new york, heavily inspired by the city and its people. ‘the oven’, with its continuous filthy groove intensified by metallic percussions, is a serious candidate for an instant classic and a deadly weapon when used on a dancefloor. the grittiness of “the oven” was depicted through images of the less beaten paths of new york in a well-received official video published recently by the label. dark yet insanely dynamic “transit system”, based on field recordings of the new york city subway, opens with a bang the b side of the record, followed by “strictly hardcore”, a sonic manifesto of brutality. get it while it’s hot!

harleighblu x starkiller is a formidable link-up between british soul/electronic singer harleighblu and la duo starkiller (the production outfit of c.e. garcia & alfredo e. fratti, members of adrian younges venice dawn). a science fiction film in sonic form, the amorine lp tells a tragic future love story in which high drama collides with a cool, clean, sci-fi atmosphere via hip hop sensibilities that draw on musical references from psychedelic funk to dj shadow to portishead.

jake one’s discography reads like a who’s who list of some of the greatest and most successful artists in the history of hip hop. that’s what makes him truly unique. blurring the lines between the underground and overground. providing sonic backdrops for such incredible emcees as de la soul, scarface, freeway, mf doom, evidence, casual, elzhi, brother ali, and rakim among others, but polishing that same formula and providing records for the likes of drake, rick ross, t.i., 50 cent, snoop dogg, j cole, wale, dom kennedy, and royce 5’9”, jake one is one of the exceptions that has worked equally with both of these sides of the industry. exceptionally. “prayer hands”, a collection of instrumentals created from gospel sources, includes some of those recordings amongst others that all remind you that jake one has pretty much become the go-to producer for any major artist that wants some real hip hop shit on their album. and understandably so.

for over five years, all day i dream has been where deep and emotive meet house music. propelled by a community of forward thinking artists drawn around the scion of master curator and sunset/sunrise set specialist, lee burridge. all day i dream formally welcomes lost desert to the label with the release of lingala, a two-track collaborative effort with burridge himself, that also features junior on vocals. lost desert was picked out of obscurity after burridge discovered his music while trekking in a remote area of a long lost land. a fast forged friendship inevitably lead to the studio, and lingala’s the enrapturing sophomore result. the duo’s first project together debuted on lee’s night time imprint, get weird, earlier this year to widespread support. lingala, is a beautifully composed ten-minute sonic journey. built around a mystical lead vocal sung by newcomer junior in his native linagles the raw emotion slowly builds in intensity over propulsive basslines and deep melodic grooves . gorje hewek & izhevski’s interpretation of lingala is a markedly different affair. focussing on musical layers rather than the vocal the duo’s signature spacey atmospheres and minimal rhythmic percussion add extra strings creating uplifting moments that contrast the original’s mood.

spain s slow town rarely fails to deliver the goods. split, so called because it contains tracks from numerous artists, more than lives up to the label s rising reputation. it probably helps that the a-side comes from former bent man and longtime east midlands deep house stalwart nail. his -shake back- explores similar sonic territory to pepe bradock s -deep burnt-, whilst retaining the chunky, bass-heavy bottom-end recognizable from his releases for classic, shabby doll and robsoul recordings. on the flip, there s an equally assured cut from london stalwarts jonno & tommo. -wolf spirit- is an altogether more tech-tinged affair, built around a restless electronic bassline, hypnotic percussion and woozy, late night chords.

stockholm-based imprint swedish brandy productions serves up a sultry four track v/a 12 inch with deep and soulful gems. first out on the a side you get the track * legs lover*. equipped with yamaha rs-7000, moog rouge and roland juno 106, moscow based house and techno purist and producer harry light gives us an uncompromising old school deep house groover with crisp pounding beats, stuttering chords and distinct catchy hooks. harry light has previous releases on labels such as artreform, pro-tez and beef to name a few. the a side ends off with the post-disco sounding killer track “overland & sea” by london based producer and dj dan westlake aka westlake72. dan’s sound borrows liberally from the history of club and dance music, mixing and matching eras to create his own contemporary sonic palette, sighting the early and mid 80 s new york post-disco producers such as darryl payne and paul simpson in particular as key influences. on the flip side soultechnic aka deejaykul delivers the deep and classy track “addicted”. rául navarette, the man behind both aliases, has been holding it down since the late 80 s, releasing music on labels like atjazz record company, z records, peng, del, basic fingers and xtrasolar records, and remixing great artists like opolopo, the rurals, gregory del piero, kenny bobien, monday michiru, monodeluxe, diviniti and many more.

popping up for the first time on figure spc y, it was the remarkable synth-work of ubx127 that instantly struck a chord with the labels demand for substantial techno. now the stockholm artist proves himself loyal and hits back twofold with a pair of eps that further highlight his mastery of both vivid modulation and effective sequencing. leading into this batch of new tunes are the crafty and beautifully fleshed-out synth-arpeggios of opener han, which ubx127 complements gracefully by adding tender touches of melody. a2 cut create and destroy displays a new side to the producer that verges on the manic, building upon a swirling theme that soon flies into a lunatic frenzy. soothing then are the spacious sounds of barabrus, a crisp piece of floating breakbeats and shoving sub-bass. living up to its name, swells starts as a bold synth-led groove and slowly grows into a romping beast that rebels against glistening sonic whiplashes. even in its own right constant permutation part 1 stands as a cohesive and compelling record that will add to any collection. but with its equally strong successor already waiting in the wings, it is ubx127 himself who will make a lasting impression.

following on from march s shlømo remix package featuring donato dozzy, bambounou, shlømo and label boss kennedy smith, bright sound s second release of 2016 will new a brand new ep from sweden s andreas tilliander. with his releases on his own repeatle imprint and his tm404 alias s hardware-driven techno featuring on skudge white and kontra-musik, tilliander is among sweden s most versatile talents working right now. his arrival on bright sounds is of a piece with bsrx 004, last year s reissue of fellow swede henrik johansson s 1997 ep as smyglyssna. as with johansson s record, tilliander s stettin libau ep explores slower tempo techno, locating the moments of space and energy in between its rhythmic structures. this search is most keenly observed in knapp ledsyn , with its ever-shifting sonic landscape melting away at various points to reveal its unusual, skeletal beats and hidden melodic details, while the ep title track and nybliven lots apply that approach to what might at first be a traditional dub techno template, yet still offering further small moments of off-beat character. completing the release is a detox operation remix of knapp ledsyn from nonplace records chief burnt friedman, in which the german veteran strips things down to a gentle patter of drums overlaid with suggestive flashes of the original s rich atmospheric elements.

emotional especial comes together with future nuggets for a -special- one-off collaboration. reinterpreting the music of steaua de mare are four remixes from rising (eastern) stars khidja and mehmet aslan. the first in a short series of especial -specials- - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with future nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, steaua de mare. returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked. first khidja take album track babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds. next mehmet aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. on the flip, mehmet then reworks album highlight, doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds. to finish, khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 septembrie. going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. a perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.
